1 23-0935 Subject: Affirming Oakland's Support For The Congressional And Worldwide Calls For Immediate Ceasefire In Gaza
From: Councilmember Fife
Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution Affirming Oakland's Love Life Commitment And Support For The Congressional And Worldwide Calls For An Immediate Ceasefire In Gaza
Ceasefire, now. This is a critical opportunity to end decades of unjust genocide and political fragmentation. Palestinians are being stripped of their basic dignity and human right to live.
As a healthcare student I strongly support ceasefire. We cannot continue to bankroll genocide and the willful targeting of healthcare workers and infrastructure.
This resolution is ill informed and biased against Israel and its right to defend itself. There is no mention of the atrocities committed by Hamas which broke the ceasefire which was in place before 10/07th. Oakland' would be better served if the City Council's focused its efforts on reducing crime and fighting deaths in our own city, which are out of control.
As an Oakland resident I support a ceasefire in Gaza. Let’s have solidarity with Palestinians who are fighting for their right to exist. This is not war, it is not complicated, it is genocide.
As a Jewish person living and working in Oakland it is imperative that the Council support this resolution, because as a Jewish person living and working for justice in this world I know that NEVER AGAIN means for ANYONE, EVER. The unleashing of violence against the people of Palestine is not only inhumane, but makes living less safe for all people across the world. Support this resolution to show us that our electeds understand that we are stronger together and that bombing will never create peace and safety.
So many of us learned about the Nazi Holocaust with the mantra: Never again for anyone. Oakland electeds, this is a crucial moment for you to publicly take a stand opposing ethnic cleansing and genocidal policies that have targeted Palestinians for seven decades and counting. US’ unwavering support for Israel means we are complicit in the horrific killings of Gazans (and also of Palestinians in the West Bank). Your constituents expect you to stand on the side of humanity, not fear. Please support a much needed call for permanent ceasefire. In doing so, you will show your commitment to all of humanity, Muslims and Jews alike.
I have lived and worked in Oakland and have a deep love for this city. Thank you to the City Council for bringing forth this resolution and I urge you to unanimously support it. We need every level of government to speak out that 5,000 Palestinian children’s lives lost is enough and we cannot condone the loss of even one more. We must apply as much pressure upon Pres. Biden and the majority of Congress as possible to stop being complicit in this massacre.
As an Oakland resident and a social worker, I urge Oakland CIty Council to join the worldwide call for ceasefire and to also lead major American cities by being the first large city to make this declaration.
As an Oakland resident, a lawyer, and a Jew I cannot stand by while Palestinians are killed in a genocidal campaign. Oakland has a rich history of fighting against injustice in all forms, and I hope this resolution can add to the growing number of voices calling for a ceasefire. Please vote yes!
As a long time resident of Oakland and Nurse Midwife providing care within our community I urge the council to support councilmember Fife’s resolution for ceasefire. This action aligns with public opinion and sends a clear message to constituents that you hear and support our call in for our government to stop the humanitarian catastrophe we have witnessed for over 50 days in Gaza.
Yes to “love life”, but no to this resolution. It is flawed in three ways:
First, it does not acknowledge the murders of 1400 people on Oct 7 that precipitated the current crisis. The ceasefire would not even be needed if those people were still alive. Loving life should apply to all lives.
Second, there was no resolution calling for a ceasefire in Mali, in Tigray, in Myanmar, or in Ukraine. Why does this conflict need a special resolution from the council where the others did not? It seems like a bad precedent that draws the council into every international conflict.
Third, it’s not even clear what a ceasefire means. At a superficial level , it means that Israeli forces would stop their military invasion and bombing of Gaza. But does it also mean that every armed Gazan must stop shooting too? Does it mean that conflict in the West Bank must stop? It seems pointless to issue a generic resolution when we don’t even know what we’re asking for.

I support a cease fire in Gaza.

We need a true ceasefire, then an end to the occupation. Unlike the USA at large, Oakland can be on the right side of history.

Our local government needs to use its political leverage to encourage our state and national governments to end the illegal occupation of Palestine.

ceasefire now!
Ceasefire now. Ceasefire now. Free Palestine. ❤️
Permanent ceasefire now. Free Palestine. This is not a question.
Cease fire now, and end the 70 year long occupation!
