My name is Diane Iglesias. I have lived in Oakland since 1980 and have worked at the Claremont hotel since 1990.

My name is Matt Fondy. I live in [Oakland / East Oakland / specific neighborhood / major cross streets / address / District 6]. I'm writing in support of the proposed Right to Recall ordinance. Workers in our community need your help. The majority of hotel and food service workers are laid off, and many don’t know if they will have a job to go back to. Workers need the City Council to act now to give them some hope. Workers who have been laid off due to the Covid pandemic should have the opportunity to get their old jobs back before companies start hiring new employees. It's especially important for workers who've dedicated more time to working for a business to have the first chance at coming back to work. Please support the Right to Recall Ordinance and pass it without delay!

My name is Adam Barr and I live in Eastmont, District 6. After Oakland's years-long boom with the Warriors' post-season success, and all the revenue and attention it has brought our community, it would be unconscionable to leave our venue-worker colleagues out in the cold. Any business-person will tell you: this crisis is ripe for exploitation by monied interests in the hotel and events sector if we allow it. Multi-decade veteran workers who have earned their raises and benefits can be cheaply replaced by their juniors. Broke furloughed workers can be offered a take-it-or-leave it gig that endangers their loved ones in the uncharted aftermath of COVID. Oakland is better than that! Or else it isn't. That's the decision in front of you today: do you see workers as people or as a commodity? Are we labor, to be sourced through supply-lines optimized for profit? Or are we citizens, communities, and families, with the support of our city for our safety, our careers, and our self-determination? Who runs Oakland? The people? Or Big Ag and Bon Apetit? Your call, City Council! If you are of, by, and for the people you will SUPPORT the Right to Recall Ordinance and pass it without delay!
