My name is Erin Olson, and I am an Oakland resident of district 2 writing to urge you to defund the OPD by 50%. While I agree with the spirit of the initiative that my council member, Nikki Fortunato Bas, has put forward to reallocate at least $25 million from the OPD towards our community, I believe we can do better. We have not seen nearly enough funding for essential services, such as education, housing, and overall health for the Black community, and we can no longer wait for these to receive the support they deserve.

As an Oakland resident, I am adding my voice to demand that you take immediate action to ensure the following:

    1. DEFUND OPD by 50%
    2. INVEST that $150 million in the Black New Deal
    3. STOP the use of violence against protesters
    4. CANCEL CHP's contract & remove them from Oakland

    Thank you.

Hi, my name is Christine and I live in Oakland District 1. I urge you to oppose the resolutions and reduce funds to the Oakland Police Department by 50%. Almost half of the general purpose fund is allocated to the OPD, and the paltry 5.8 million dollar cut to their inflated 291 million dollar budget is not enough. Instead of funding OPD helicopters used to harass unhoused people and communities of color, the funds should instead be used to address this current health and economic crisis, particularly for the black and brown communities who are hit hardest. Members of the city council: this should be your moral imperative. OPD has been shown to be the perpetrators of violence against our community. Black and brown people in Oakland deserve to thrive and not live under the threat of violence, illness, and homelessness. Invest that money in the Black New Deal.

I support the spirit of the proposal by Nikki Fortunato Bas: "to reallocate (from the police budget) at least $25 million towards improving safety and providing the services our residents really need," but this proposal does NOT go far enough!

Over 700 people e-commented on last week’s meeting. Over 150 spoke at the meeting itself. Over 95% of both sets of comments were in favor of defunding the police. Listen to your constituents.

As Oakland residents, we continue to demand that you take immediate action to ensure the following:

    1. DEFUND OPD by 50%
    2. INVEST that $150 million in the Black New Deal
    3. STOP the use of violence against protesters

Thank you for being on the right side of history. We will remember in November.

My name is Saabir Lockett. I work at EBASE (East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy) and FAME (Faith Alliance for a Moral Economy) Oakland must have a City budget that equitably and fully addresses the needs
of our residents and workers. As members of our city’s faith communities, we must insist that
you do adopt a budget that reflects a deep commitment to fairness, safety and health for our
    most vulnerable communities:

    ● Defund from Oakland Police Department by 50%
    ● Invest in community services, especially in flatland neighborhoods
    ● No furlough days or cuts for city workers, the majority of whom are black people and
    people of color
    ● Stand up the Department of Workplace & Employment Standards to protect the rights of
black and brown workers in Oakland.
    ● Support a just and inclusive recovery for Oakland workers.

I am an Oakland teacher who has served OUSD's special education department for 10 years now. Leaders in Oakland must stop investing in police and start investing in our future. For years, I have seen our schools in predominantly Black neighborhoods closing. For years, school "leaders" have cut services and resources that aid in our student's success. For years, my colleagues and I, have created several funding projects in order to get books, supplies, field trips, and technology to our classrooms. Oakland leaders have been defunding education and community services for years. This must stop now. We are asking for at least a 50% cut to OPD, and nothing less. Look to organizations such Anti-Police Terror Project and Black Organizing Project to figure out how where to put the freed up funds and how to start safety plans in our communities. City council members, you have people ready to help and make the process of defunding OPD easier. Police do not keep us safe. We do.

I am a taxpayer, resident, and voter in Oakland District 2. I urge city council to adopt council member Fortunato Bas' proposal regarding OPD's budget. No other proposal sufficiently addresses the scope of the problem with OPD, and no other proposal will satisfy the citizens of Oakland the countless community members who have been harmed by the police. We need meaningful divestment from the police and investment in the community NOW and again next budget cycle. Please do not let your constituents down, please bring in end to the chaos in Oakland city streets by listening to the demands of the public. Thank you.

I'm an Oakland resident in District 18. Given that 21% of Oakland's budget (40%+ of the GPF) currently funds the Oakland Police Department, which has been historically proven as corrupt and racist, I suggest that the council take this opportunity to consider further cuts to the police rather than cutting important social programs. I suggest defunding the OPD by 50%.

My name is Divya Sundar and I'm a resident of District 5. I echo the demands of APTP and numerous other community groups to immediately defund OPD by $150 million and reinvest that money into the Black New Deal. City Council also needs to stop the use of violence against protestors and cancel CHP's contract with the City of Oakland. Councilmember Bas's proposal to cut the OPD budget by $25 million is an important first step, but it doesn't go far enough. Budgets are a statement of our priorities. Now is the time to make transformative change in support of Black lives.

I'm writing in support of council member Fortunato Bas's proposal to defund OPD by $25 million now and to commit to defunding by 50% in the next budget cycle. This is the only proposal that is taking the demands of the community seriously and making significant changes to OPD's budget. We will not settle for insignificant cuts that simply shift positions to other departments (as proposed by Mayor Schaaf). Oakland has an opportunity to stand on the right side of history by making changes that will actually have an impact on our community and serve as a model for progressive response to the crisis of police terror and brutality against people of color. The Oakland community has been very clear in our demands. We need significant cuts so that we can invest in the community. Support for any other proposal is an insult to your constituents and to the Oakland community.

As an Oakland resident, I urge you to cut the proposed OPD budget by at least 50%. The money should not go to an organization that terrorizes its citizenry. The money should be spent on uplifting the Black and Brown community. I demand you take action to:

    1. DEFUND OPD by 50%
    2. INVEST that $150 million in the Black New Deal
    3. STOP the use of violence against protesters
    4. CANCEL CHP's contract & remove them from Oakland

Not supporting these items is non-negotiable. If you do not stand with Oakland residents, you will be voted out. I hope that you will stand with your community and lead Oakland forward into a just future.

My name is Alex Hanna and I’m trans woman of color living in District 1. I’m calling for defunding the funding of the Oakland Police Department and for Oakland to take bold action by cutting the OPD budget by at least $150 million and reinvesting in the community.

OPD takes almost HALF of Oakland's general fund each year — consuming desperately needed resources from housing, mental health, health care, parks, libraries and other vital services. The investment in policing has not made us safer. OPD remains an embarrassment to the city and a lethal threat to Oakland’s Black and brown communities. We also demand stopping the use of violence of any kind against protestors, including use of tear gas DURING A RESPIRATORY PANDEMIC. One of the largest marches led by Oakland Tech High School students ended with the use of tear gas. This is unconscionable.

My name is Jackie, and a resident of Oakland's District 1. I am again voicing my strong opposition to this budget, and urge you to take immediate action to defund OPD by at least 50%.

OPD takes more than 40% of the Oakland's General Fund, and what do we have to show for this investment? A police force that perpetually and with impunity violates the civil and human rights of Oakland's black and brown communities, and is an ongoing, active threat to BIPOC lives. The time to defund OPD is now. I echo the call to:

    1. DEFUND OPD by 50%
    2. INVEST that $150 million in the Black New Deal
    3. STOP the use of violence against protesters
    4. CANCEL CHP's contract & remove them from Oakland

We are paying attention, and will remember if you choose to stand on the right side of history when casting our votes in November.

I’m a resident of D3 and urge you to defund the OPD by 50%. These funds would be better suited to re-open public schools, pay teachers a fair wage, and purchase school supplies. We need to invest in supporting our community instead of criminalizing it. By taking away valuable community resources and boosting the OPD budget, we are not setting up our community to thrive but instead are setting up community members to be trapped by the prison system.

I'm urging you to defund OPD's general fund budget by 50% ($150 million) and put those dollars to good use in programs that value and invest in Black and Brown lives. We need to prioritize education, community resilience, mental health, housing support, and fair and livable wages. Those are the things that will make communities safer. Your constituents are demanding change and we will hold you accountable until you do the right thing.
