We need to defund the police. We need to restrict their scope of operations in Oakland and eventually abolish them. Police have no place responding to mental health crises, domestic disturbances, or patrolling our neighborhoods looking for crime. The majority of Oaklanders do not call the police because of the violence and escalation they bring with them.
We need the OPD overinflated budget to be reallocated to social services and employee first responders who are trained in de-escalation, counseling, and crises management. We do not need an occupying army patrolling our streets, they have done enough damage and need to be held accountable so that our communities can heal and create new systems that support Oakland residents rather than oppress them.
