If you want reduced confusion, accidents, and speeding then ban cars downtown altogether. This has worked in cities like Bologna, Italy. We would, of course, need better public transit downtown before limiting cars could work, however.
I agree. East Oakland is definitely in need. Enhanced transit in the form of a light rail passenger train along MacArthur Blvd. would bring more people and more business to East Oakland. Look what the Third Street light rail project did for the Bay View neighborhood in San Francisco.

I'm an avid walker and own no car. Support for pedestrians is support for public transit:
Here we are in the heart of an economic boom spurred by technology, yet we have fewer local transportation choices in downtown Oakland than we did in the 1940s when there were trains on Broadway and there were no freeways dissecting the city. Jack London Square sits cut-off from the rest of Oakland by the ugly wall that is Interstate 880. We need to re-connect downtown Oakland with the rest of Oakland with surface streets, greenways, and local trains:

Yes. Oakland has more important issues to focus on like public safety, transit, and housing.

Human behavior is generally predictable. Put in a trash can and people will litter less.

And many bus stops have no seating at all. The Broadway Shuttle (http://gs-horizons.blogspot.com/2015/11/imagine-train.html) is one of many examples. Let's make Oakland more people-friendly in general!
George Schupp almost 9 years ago on Add public trash cans/enclosures with each new development
Bravo! Great idea. Public and private entities need to work together for the good of Oakland. It's the city's job to require developers to contribute.
