I agree that Fortunato Bas’s proposed legislation doesn’t go far enough. I support a 50% reduction in OPD’s budget and no unauthorized overtime, with the resulting savings going to fund housing, jobs, mental health services, restorative justice, drug treatment programs and youth programs. OPD is asked to do too many functions that are better carried out by other professionals. Policing needs to be redefined. It is definitely not the only way to keep the community safe.
I agree that the homeless need to be provided with services and that most homeless suffer from mental health problems. It's shameful that we can't take care of these people. Mental health services are crucial.
