They make navigating downtown confusing, mainly, I think, because the streets aren't symetrical and numbered, the way streets in Manhattan are. But I think one-ways are a better solution for bicycles and pedestrians. In fact, I would use one-ways to create bike-and-pedestrian-only streets in order to stop the conflict btwn cars and bikes. Bike folks and the city seem to think Oakland's growth can be handled with bike lanes. I doubt it, esp. since, as our new residents age, they're going to need cars more and more.
