From: Councilmember Thao President Kaplan, Pro Tem Kalb And Taylor
Recommendation: Adopt An Emergency Ordinance (1) Adding Chapter 5.94 To The Oakland Municipal Code To Establish Emergency Paid Sick Leave For Oakland Employees During The Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) Pandemic And (2) Amending Chapter 2.44 Of The Oakland Municipal Code To Include Enforcement Of Emergency Paid Sick Leave As Part Of The Duties Of The Department Of Workplace And Employment Standards
Hi my name is Evangeline and I work at the Claremont Hotel. I am for the Emergency Paid Sick Leave. We want to feel supported when we go back to work especially for employees like me who have an autoimmune disorder. We want to feel Safe!
My name is Max Pentzell. I work in the food/hospitality industry. I have lived in Oakland for over 20 years. And I work in Oakland.
Oakland City Councilmembers:
I urge you to pass the Emergency Paid Sick Days ordinance.
Frontline service workers
are supporting all of us who are sheltered in place by making sure we can acquire essential items, and by keeping our economy going. The city should support service workers by making sure that they have access to immediate paid sick days to help flatten the curve and protect themselves and our community.
We are calling on the City Council to show leadership to protect our frontline service workers by voting yes on the emergency paid sick days ordinance.
Thank You
My name is Patcharawan Rittong. I work at the Claremont hotel. I urge you to please vote “yes” on the Emergency Paid Sick Days ordinance.
We shall get through this pandemic together.
Thank you.
Workers need to be protected now! We must ensure that they ensure they receive paid sick leave and Right to return to work for those laid off due to the pandemic. We can do this by having the Department of Workplace and Employment Standards needs to ensure our workers are protected.
My name is Dennis Fung. I am a worker here in the city of Oakland.
I urge you to pass the Emergency Paid Sick Days ordinance.

My name is Carlos Saavedra. I am a worker in the heavily impacted hotel industry, an active member of my union 'Unite Here! Local 2850' and a local resident in the North Oakland area. I urge you to pass the Emergency Paid Sick Days ordinance. I believe we need to provide a good safety net for those risking their lives by exposing themselves during these times. In order to flatten the curve and prevent a more catastrophic outcome in our health care system, most of us must remain at home, but we still need to be able to access basic needs, bravely covered by those workers in the front line. It is only fair that they get coverage in the event that they or any of their family members is affected during the pandemic. Otherwise, many of them may get sick and feel forced to just keep working to be able to provide for their basic needs, putting all of us at greater risk of contagion. It is not only the right thing to do for them, but also protects the rest of us not to get the virus. Thank you
My name is Cheuk-Ning and I am a community organizer at the Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) in Chinatown. I urge our councilmembers to stand for city employees and their families and communities NOW by passing this paid sick leave ordinance. We cannot stand idly by and have more deaths of essential workers on our hands, choosing to allow them to get sick instead. Please: pass this ordinance today.
As a resident in Oakland's D5, I urge you to vote yes on this emergency paid sick leave ordinance. Workers in Oakland shouldn't have to choose between their job and their health!! When one of us is healthier, all of us are -- we all rely on each other right now. Huge thank you to councilmembers Thao, Bas and Kalb for your leadership on this crucial issue!
Please vote yes on the proposed emergency paid sick days ordinance, without any more loopholes or exemptions! Workers are risking their lives everyday to help make sure those of us sheltered in place have what we need. Frontline service workers are keeping our economy going. All workers need the peace of mind knowing that they have access to paid sick days in case they or their family are directly affected by Covid. Protect Oakland workers!
My name is Maria Moreno and I'm a community organizer and a restaurant worker. The Restaurant Opportunities Center of The Bay, who I work for, with our hundreds of members ranging from frontline food service workers, employers, and consumers demands that our workers receive a complete Paid Sick Leave policy that includes them all without any more loopholes or exemptions. Our food service workers are risking their lives to make sure we have food on our tables. They do not make any exceptions on who they serve or when they serve us. They deserve that the City of Oakland does the same for them.
Dear Council members, as a resident of D6 I urge you all to pass this critical emergency paid sick days ordinance to protect Oakland workers and families. Please vote yes.
Thank you CM Thao, Bas and Kalb for your leadership on this.
Dear Council Members,
Thank you to my council member Sheng Thao for your leadership, and to council members Nikki Bas and Dan Kalb as well. I urge the council to pass this important public health protective measure that is a critical piece of an effective response to the current Covid-19 emergency as well as for future public health crises. We are only as strong and healthy as our most vulnerable and least protected residents.
Hello. My name is Roman Maldonado a worker at the Oakland Coliseum. I urge you to pass the “ Emergency Paid Sick Days Ordinance” in support of the frontline services workers. This essential people are making the difference for all of us in one way or another! Please vote yes.

During this time of the COVID-19 pandemic, front line workers need our support more than ever. Everyday they go into work, they are risking their own health to provide essential items. In return, the least we could do for our front line workers is to ensure access to immediate paid sick days. These workers are only making minimum wage and only being provided with masks and sanitizing products to "keep them safe". Our front line workers' health is just as important as the health of people who are sheltered in place. City Council has the opportunity to step up and protect our front line service workers by giving them the emergency paid sick days they deserve.
My name is Tamara Wyman. I am a worker here in the city of Oakland.
I urge you to pass the Emergency Paid Sick Days ordinance.

Before this pandemic workers were already struggling making minimum wage, now they are faced with having to put their own health at risk with no support by the companies. So we ask the city to really think about all the workers on the front line and what kind of message it sends by not supporting them now when they need it the most.
