My name is Summer. I am resident in North Oakland. I urge you to pass the Emergency Paid Sick Days ordinance and to stand up the Department of Workplace Standards and Enforcement, as required by Measure Z.

Frontline service workers are supporting all of us who are sheltered in place by making sure we can acquire essential items, and by keeping our economy going. The city should support service workers by making sure that they have access to immediate paid sick days (agenda item #9) to help flatten the curve and protect themselves and our community.

We are calling on the City Council to show leadership to protect our frontline service workers by voting yes on the emergency paid sick days ordinance (item #9) and making sure the Department of Workplace & Employment Standards (agenda items #7 & 8) is up and running by this July, according to Measure Z.

My name is Victor Oliver. I am worker and native of East Oakland. I urge you to pass the Emergency Paid Sick Days ordinance and to stand up the Department of Workplace Standards and Enforcement, as required by Measure Z.

Giving workers paid sick leave is one of the most straight-forward ways you can protect and show support for our communities. No one should have to choose between their health and their livelihood and not having these very simple measures in place is only putting our city at a greater risk, both financially and health-wise.

Frontline service workers are supporting all of us who are sheltered in place by making sure we can acquire essential items, and by keeping our economy going. The city should support service workers by making sure that they have access to immediate paid sick days to help flatten the curve and protect themselves and our community.

My name is Melissa, and I am a resident of West Oakland. As a voter who supported Measure Z, I am asking you to do what is required and pass the Emergency Paid Sick Days ordinance. I am sheltered in place and as all of us, I depend on frontline workers for essential items and services. Without immediate paid sick days for these workers, it will be impossible to flatten the curve enough in our community, putting all of us in unnecessary danger. Protect our frontline service workers and vote yes on items #7 & #9.

I support the emergency sick days proposal, because as a service worker I know alot of people in this industry do not have access to medical care, this proposal will help workers that live paycheck to paycheck stay home if they are sick, and that protects everuone from the COVID19 virus.

As an Oaklander, I urge you to vote YES

My name is Emmanuele Allamani. I am a restaurant worker, and live in East Oakland. I urge you to pass this measure.
More then ever, we are seeing the importance of service workers, who are now literally providing us with the goods we need for our sustenance, well being and survival. Our working conditions are more at risk then before due to Corona. Many of us do not even have health insurance, and contracting the virus could not only put our life at risk, but also our long term financial stability if we survived it requiring hospitalization.
More then ever there is the need for a paid sick leave which could give many workers like myself the possibility of of not coming to work, even when showing mild flu symptoms we have grown to accustomed to working thru, but which could now put many of our colleagues and community members at risk. We need the possibility of not having to make a the choice between prioritizing our livelihood and our basic economic substance.

I work at the Claremont hotel as a server and am well aware of the challenges faced by working people of Oakland. I wish to voice my support for paid sick leave and for the guarantee that workers have the option of returning to their jobs once the quarantine is over. Not only is it basic humanity that requires this, working people are the backbone of the local economy and their well being is fundamental to the health Oakland.

I strongly urge the Council to support items 7 and 9 on tonight’s agenda. We depend on these essential workers to carry us through this crisis. It’s up to the City to provide an actual mechanism for their fair treatment and adequate protection.

My name is Filipa and I am a resident of Oakland. It is very important that we as a community ensure that those workers who are putting their bodies on the line to work every day are able to access paid sick leave, over and above the grossly inadequate protections guaranteed to some workers by the federal government. We have a duty to protect vulnerable members of our community, such as those who need to stay home to care for ailing loved ones or who are immunocompromised. No one should have to choose between forgoing much needed income and going to work while sick, risking infecting their coworkers. This is not only a moral imperative, it’s simple common sense from a public health perspective. Oakland should lead by example on this issue.
