6 26-0548 Subject: School Safety Update From Oakland Unified School District
From: Councilmember Brown
Recommendation: Receive An Informational Report From Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) Regarding Current School Safety Protocols, Funding Structures, And Strategic Safety Updates
I am a parent of a Skyline freshman, where the shooting happened in November last year. I am concerned that OUSD has not been transparent in its budgeting process and don't understand how anyone can say the their budgeting is "student centered" when you are allowing the funding of a critical part of the violence prevention program in the high schools to lapse and be left to the whims of some unstated "external funding." What in the budget was more important than student safety? The city of Oakland and OUSD both own the responsibility of keeping its students safe in schools and yet we are looking to outside resources to fund the minimal promise of safety in schools. Please work together to finally develop a plan that keeps safety programs funded in our schools and stop the finger pointing.
