    Julie Haydon 19 days ago

My name is Julie Haydon, I am the Director of Children's & Youth Choirs for Cantare, which provides weekly choral music education for over 2700 Oakland students in under resourced neighborhoods each week. I am commenting in support of re-opening the budget to unfreeze the Cultural Affairs Manager Position. This position plays a critical role in the vitality of our city. The arts bring important economic resources to our city and Oakland's any arts organizations play an important role in providing education programs in our school and community. Oakland would not be the vibrant and engaging city it is without the contributions of arts organizations. The Cultural Affairs Manager plays a key role in guiding the city's Cultural Affairs Division and the vision for arts in our community. This is not a luxury, it is a key part of our community. Without it, Oakland students will not have access to the same arts education opportunities and our residents will not have access to the same events and experiences that make Oakland unique. Oaklanders must have creative outlets for expression and beauty during this challenging time in history.

I encourage the City Council to prioritize this position and to recognize the crucial role that the arts play in our city, our schools and our economic well being. I can not imagine Oakland as a city without a Cultural Affairs team. Thank you for your consideration.

    Dharma Galang 19 days ago

My name is Dharma Galang and I am the development director for the Oakland Asian Cultural Center. I am placing a comment in support to re-open the budget and unfreeze the Cultural Affairs Manager Position.

The Cultural Affairs Manager leads the Cultural Affairs Division and helps the City of Oakland create strategy around using the City's art and cultural capital to draw visitors and bring in tourist dollars. Additionally, the manager helps raise funds and create awareness around Oakland's rich arts and culture.

Without the Cultural Affairs Manager, there is a good chance that the division will dissolve. As a result, the City of Oakland could become the only major City without a Cultural Affairs Team. This means Oakland will be the only major City without a Cultural Affairs Team and not have the cultural infrastructure to implement Oakland's strategic planning to use art and culture as an economic draw for the City of Oakland.
