5.24 25-0629 Subject: Resolution Urging Governor Newsom To Grant Pardons
From: Councilmember Fife
Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution Respectfully Urging Governor Gavin Newsom For Clemency By Granting Pardons To Maria Legarda, Nghiep Ke Lam, Chanthon Bun, And Borey Ai, Rehabilitated, Formerly Incarcerated Individuals Who Serve The Community Through Their Work With The Asian Prisoner Support Committee
Hi there, my name is Cheryl and I'm a resident of the city of Oakland. I’m here to voice my strong support for the resolution in support of the APSC 4: Maria Legarda, Nghiep Ke Lam, Chanton Bun, and Borey Ai. These four individuals are not only leaders in our community, they are survivors of war, displacement, and domestic violence who have dedicated their lives to healing and helping others. They’ve already served their time, and they continue to selflessly and tirelessly give back every day. They are true inspirations. The threat of deportation doesn’t just harm them. It tears at the fabric of the communities they’ve helped build!
I am one of so many who have been impacted by that work. Because of them, I have grown so much as a leader, organizer, and community member. I’ve had the honor of learning from the APSC 4, of being in spaces where they’ve held space for others and modeled what real healing and accountability can look like. Their leadership has shaped the person I am today. They are true inspirations to me and our community would not be the same without them. Please vote yes!! Thank you so much.
I strongly support this resolution as I witnessed the deep humility, love and unwavering support they offer the community. As Governor Newsome has said a few days ago, "As the fourth largest economy in the world — from the Inland Empire to the Bay Area — regions throughout California are growing, strengthening local communities and boosting our state’s future." These individuals are living proof of a diverse, thriving California. They turned pain into purpose, and helped build the unbreakable home we all deserve. Pardoning these individuals is not only a recognition of their rehabilitation but also a rejection of a system that continues to punish people long after serving their time. Governor Newsom has the opportunity to affirm California's values of redemption, racial justice and community investment. I respectfully urge you to adopt this resolution and stand with the fight for dignity, equity and healing for all. Thank you!!
