I have been teaching swimming at Oakland High School for 20 years. We are the only public high school in Oakland that teaches students how to swim in PE classes anymore. It's a historical program at Oakland High where hundreds of students learn to swim every year.
Live Oak Pool was to be painted October 2023, but the job was unsuccessful; they tried again, but still something was not quite right. During this time a new filter was also put in. Lots of money was put into trying to upgrade the pool, but mistakes were made, and now it sits unused.
Live Oak Pool is the only city's competition length pool. It is used by Special Olympics, Oakland High School physical education classes and swim team, a master's team, a club team, the summer rec league, and many City of Oakland aquatics classes.
There isn't another public swimming pool close by on the Oakland High side of the freeway. The pool is used by diverse and underserved groups.
My students love swimming class and I love teaching them! We have teens that are afraid to put their face in the water at the first class, and end up joining the swim team or taking lifeguarding courses by spring.
To ignore the facilities needs would be throwing money down the drain.
The community needs this pool. Everyone knows that it is important to learn to swim, that drowning rates are high and preventable, and that a successful city takes care of their facilities.
Let's take care of our community, our youth, and fix Live Oak Pool!
