10 25-0455 Subject: Centro Legal De La Raza Grant Agreement
From: Housing And Community Development Department
Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution Awarding A Grant Agreement To Centro Legal De La Raza, Inc. For An Amount Not To Exceed One Million Dollars ($1,000,000) To Provide Tenant Legal Services And Eviction Protection
As a member of this community, I recognize how important it is to be able to receive tenant legal services and eviction protection. I have experienced first hand the unfairness of landlord abuse and have sought out help from community organizations. This service is an integral part of fairness and equality for all. I stand with the community of Oakland and ask you to please vote YES on the Oakland Housing Secure contract as it is an important service to help my fellow community members with eviction protection and tenant legal services.
As a member of this community, I urge you to vote YES on the $1MM Oakland Housing Secure (OHS) contract. The opportunity to safeguard the dignity of our most vulnerable residents lies in your hands. Housing is more than just a roof—it’s the cornerstone of a safe, just, and equitable community. Supporting OHS goes beyond providing resources; it’s an act of justice and fairness. This decision reflects leadership and a commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind. Stand in solidarity with the community and vote for this crucial program. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to the people of Oakland.
As leaders of this city, you have the power to protect the dignity and stability of Oakland’s most vulnerable residents. I urge you to vote YES on the $1MM Oakland Housing Secure (OHS) contract—not just as a policy decision, but as a commitment to the people who depend on us.
Housing is more than just shelter; it is the foundation of a thriving, safe, and equitable community. Every day, families, seniors, and low-income residents face the devastating reality of displacement. By funding OHS, you are not only providing critical resources, but also upholding the values of justice and fairness that Oakland stands for.
This vote is about more than funding—it is about leadership, responsibility, and ensuring that no one is left behind. I URGE you to stand with the community and vote in favor of this essential program.
Thank you for your dedication to Oakland and its people.
As an Oakland tenant, I also urge you to please vote YES! The cost of living is incredibly expensive, rent is too high across the board, and wages aren't increasing to keep up. Add to that the cost of hiring a lawyer, and legal advice is just too cost prohibitive for many of us, especially our most vulnerable neighbors. I believe housing is a human right, and we need to protect and support our people from being evicted with impunity when they would have legal recourse otherwise (if they could only afford it). That is the responsibility of our government, to provide that support and protection to the people. Again, please vote YES!
I urge you to vote YES on the $1MM Oakland Housing Secure Program (OHS) contract. Since 2018, OHS has been the supported housing legal services for low-income renters across Oakland. providing vital homelessness prevention and anti-displacement legal services. This program prioritizes those in Oakland most vulnerable to displacement, Black and Brown low income residents who depend on programs like these to help them remain housed.
We are in the midst of an eviction crisis. Eviction rates continue to soar, averaging approximately 150% of pre-pandemic levels every month, with no end in sight. Low-income homeowners in theOakland face similarly dire circumstances, with most federal mortgage relief funding exhausted. As you know, evictions and foreclosures are devastating on individuals and families and have ripple effects that can destabilize their lives for years to come. They also deeply destabilize our communities.
I have consistently seen both the need for these services and the value of the OHS program specifically in our community. Without the OHS program, housing legal services capacity will be dramatically reduced, and residents in Oakland will not be able to access the vital housing legal services that help them remain housed. This program is necessary to prevent displacement, to prevent homelessness, and to keep Oakland families safely and stably housed. Please vote YES on the Oakland Housing Secure contract. Thank you.
