3 25-0087 Subject: Informational Report On Lead Remediation In OUSD Schools
From: Councilmember Reid
Recommendation: Receive An Informational Report From The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) On Lead Remediation Efforts In OUSD Schools, Including Current Progress, Future Plans, And Health And Safety Measures To Ensure A Safe Learning Environment For Students And Staff
As an OUSD teacher, this issue makes me incredibly emotional and uncomfortable. Our kids deserve clean water and something needs to happen now, these temporary bandaid solutions do not fix the problem. GIVE KIDS CLEAN WATER
My name is Margie Lewis and I live in East Oakland. I have a granddaughter who will be attending OUSD in a couple of years.
I was horrified to learn that all OUSD schools have lead contaminated water! City Council and OUSD must work together to support OUSD
students and staff having clean, safe drinking water. You need to free up some of the millions of dollars that are earmarked for lead abatement to help get OUSD out of this crisis so we can have lead free drinking water now - not later. This situation is unconscionable! Thank You
OUSD's solution cannot simply be "more FloWater" stations and to leave it at that. Not only have these stations proven to be unreliable in conditions of heavy usage, a focus exclusively on such stations allows OUSD to avoid doing the kind of work necessary to discover the root causes of the contamination we're seeing across the district and virtually ensures that this crisis will recur as it has for at least a decade. It also entirely sets aside the question of contamination in classroom sinks, in taps servicing school gardens, etc. We demand that OUSD lower its action threshold to *0 ppb*, that OUSD come clean about what caused an unconscionable failure to communicate with school communities, and that OUSD present a robust remediation plan audited by third-party experts, We demand that Oakland city government frees up some of the millions of dollars in lead abatement money it has so far failed to leverage and that it be accountable for how this money may have been spent or misappropriated. Right now the district and the city are each throwing up their hands when it comes to who is responsible for fixing this and, as usual, students and staff are caught in the middle, poorly served on all sides. District and city leadership must work together to get the lead out of OUSD.
I am a D4 resident and Edna Brewer parent, writing to support the City of Oakland and OUSD working together to ensure that Oakland schools provide safe and clean drinking water for students, staff and community members. The city can and should direct money earmarked for lead abatement to our school sites, making sure our vulnerable populations have access to safe and clean drinking water on site. I'm a social worker at a school with high lead levels in OUSD. My students and colleagues deserve lead-free drinking water. OUSD board and City Council, please work together to support OUSD students and staff having clean, safe drinking water in all schools! Tell the City Council to free up some of the millions of dollars that have been earmarked for lead abatement to help OUSD get out of this crisis! As a reminder, there is no level of lead that is safe for kids. We need to do better for our young people - they are the future of our city and our world!
My name is Jonah, and I am a teacher at a lead-impacted school in OUSD. My students and fellow staff, like all students and staff across the district, are deserving of a school board and city council that is willing to collaborate and work through all avenues available to invest in public education and protect the health of our students and educators. Get the lead out of OUSD!
The District withholding the most recent lead findings and offering nothing in terms of immediate remediation or resources for students and workers at affected sites is deeply disturbing. We need transparency and we need them to show us their ability to provide safe learning and working environments for all. Its hot this week, we need clean water NOW!
