As with Council accepting in full the roadmap laid out by the Ceasefire Audit Report and its subsequent, highly collaborative, and faithful implementation by OPD, the Mayor's office and DVP, I urge you to continue funding the Shotspotter gunshot detection system. It's already made a crucial difference in identifying the location of gunshots, especially in neighborhoods where residents tend to be reluctant to contact OPD. Shotspotter helps build on the tangible results which have re-invigorated Ceasefire this year. We need every positive element to continue this progress.

ShotSpotter is ineffective. We want to spend funds in ways to prevent crime, not throw away money ineffectively responding to it. It will waste $2.5M of Oakland taxpayers money over the next three years. Dozens of cities, including Chicago and Detroit, have canceled Spotshotter, finding the technology ineffective and inaccurate. ShotSpotter profits off of violence, why would it want to reduce it? https://igchicago.org/2021/08/24/oig-finds-that-shotspotter-alerts-rarely-lead-to-evidence-of-a-gun-related-crime-and-that-presence-of-the-technology-changes-police-behavior/
