Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution To (1) Commemoratively Rename Mandela Parkway Between 7th Street And West Grand Avenue As 'Arthur B. Shanks II Way' And (2) Authorize The Installation Of Plaques Honoring Arthur B. Shanks II, Pursuant To The Policy And Criteria Established By Resolution No. 77967 C.M.S.
I support a commemoration of Arthur "Art" Shanks but oppose the location of Mandela Parkway and encourage this item to be pulled and reassessed for relative/proper location on Poplar Street, since 2229 Poplar Street was the location of the training center.
In the early morning hours, trainees would run a course around the block, sometimes carrying building materials as part of the preparation of construction work. Sylvester Hodges the primary training instruction felt "endurance" and physical conditioning was as important and critical as the academic and practical experience training.
I had the pleasure of working with Art and Sylvester as a local hire liaison with area developers/development.
Please pull this item and re-assess for appropriateness and relativity at 2200 block of Poplar Street as a planned Black Panther Monument since the "The Black Panther Party started in Temescal. Our first office was in Temescal. Huey (Newton) and Bobby (Seale) went to school at Merritt College, which is in Temescal. So, Temescal is the genesis of the Black Panther Party," said Fredrika Newton, widow of the late Dr. Huey P.
