S9 24-0286 Subject: Directing The Oakland Police Commission To Propose Changes To OPD's Pursuit Policies

Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution Directing The Oakland Police Commission To Propose Changes To The Following Oakland Police Department Policies: (1) Departmental General Order J04 On Pursuit Driving; (2) Special Orders 9192 And 9212 On Vehicle Pursuits; And (3) Training Bulletin III-B.9 On Pursuit Intervention Maneuver Techniques, For Submission To The City Council Pursuant To Section 604(B)(4) Of The Oakland City Charter
I wholeheartedly support changes to this pursue policy. Determining a balance between risking property damage, injury or death during a pursue or non-pursue and further crimes committed do to inadequate responses should be evaluated.
We all know what retail theft had on the industry taking a similar non-responsive approach.
Allow the Police Commission to propose changes based on robust data and common sense.
