4 24-0295 Subject: Upgrade Default Electricity Service Plan In Oakland To Ava Community Energy's (AVA) Renewable 100 Plan
From: President Pro Tempore Kalb
Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution To Upgrade The Default Electricity Service Plan For Electricity Rate Payers In Oakland From Ava Community Energy's Bright Choice 49.4% Renewable Energy Plan (Bright Choice) To Ava Community Energy's Renewable 100% Plan (Renewable 100) To Provide 100% Renewable Energy From Wind And Solar For: 1) Municipal Accounts In March 2025; 2) Residential Accounts In March 2026, Excluding Certain Low-Income Customers; And 3) Commercial Accounts In March 2027; And Allowing Customers To Opt Down To The Bright Choice Plan
My name is Chloe Salem and I represent Save The Bay, a regional environmental organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the Bay. Save The Bay wholeheartedly supports the resolution for the city of Oakland to implement 100% renewable energy. Climate change is harming the Bay, from warming temperatures leading to more red tides, to sea level rise destroying wetland habitat and impacting shoreline communities. While we focus on helping the Bay be more resilient to the impacts of climate change, we also need to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in order to protect the bay and the communities around it. Oakland’s Equitable Climate Action Plan (ECAP) states that a 100% carbon-free electricity grid is necessary to reach the City's climate targets for 2030 and 2050. This resolution would be a key feature in protecting and restoring the Bay for all.
I strongly support this plan, and I support making it "opt in", i.e. not default, for FERA and CARE customers. I hope to speak on this issue during public testimony.
I wish to speak in favor of CC Kalb's proposal to upgrade default electricity service to 100% renewables.
I support this plan to upgrade to 100% renewable energy
I strongly support the plan to upgrade Oakland's default electricity service to Ava Community Energy's Renewable 100 plan! I am proud to be part of a city that is leading the way to mitigate the diasaterous effects of climate change. Change starts at home. Thank you, Oakland!
