Agenda Item
5.12 24-0092 Subject: Commemorative Street Renaming
From: Councilmember Fife
Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution Commemoratively Renaming The 1700 Block Of Maritime Street As 'Sergeant Morrie Turner Way'; The 2100 Block Of Maritime Street As 'Major Howard Jackson Way'; And The 000 Block Of Burma Road As 'Major General John Stanford Way', Pursuant To Local Precedent And The Policy And Criteria Established By Resolution No. 77967 C.M.S.
I fully support this initiative. Renaming the streets is a wonderful way to honor those who served our city and country and instill civic pride for all Oaklanders. I hope it is passed as written.
Rightfully so the renaming of these streets will show honor to whom honor is due. They served our country and now they can be remembered in our City.

I am a US Army combat veteran and a military historian. The renaming of streets at the old Oakland Army Bast is a living tribute to all who have served and a reminder of the sacrifices we made while in the military. These three people not only represent the US Army heritage but also the heritage of Oakland itself. I strongly support this initiative and hope you accept to move forward with the plan to rename these streets in honor of military veterans.
Thank you for getting this on the agenda. The Alameda County Veterans Affairs Commission worked diligently over the past 2 years to get this project to this point. Several community based organizations and individuals also signed testimonials for their support of this initiative. We appreciate having the support of City Council and the community.

Dear Oakland officials:
Several generations of my family have been citizens of Oakland, California since before the 1900 census. We migrated to Oakland to raise generations of our families and pursue responsible, productive lives.
The three honorees are positive mentors for our families to see. They have led us forward by their numerous contributions to our beautiful city. I support the renaming of the three streets to honor them.
Sincerely,
Antoinette Broussard Farmer
I strongly support the renaming of the 1700 Block of Maritime Street to honor these brave Black Veterans. I believe representation like this is important in our city with such rich cultural history. These Veterans are/were heroes to our nation and will be an inspiration to many in our diverse community.

I'm in strong support of renaming the streets as proposed. This is a great thing for Oakland to do.
A no-brainer to get this done. These gentlemen have represented Oakland well and deserve to have their names commemorated.
This is a wonderful thing for the city of Oakland to get behind. Let's support our vets and get this done.
What a great idea. Love it.
I 100% support this renaming effort!
