From: Councilmember Fife
Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution Affirming Oakland's Love Life Commitment And Support For The Congressional And Worldwide Calls For An Immediate Ceasefire In Gaza
I’m a local resident and small business owner here in Oakland, CA. An immediate ceasefire is needed and the people of Gaza need our support. Please do everything and anything possible to help make a ceasefire happen NOW!! Free Palestine!!
As a Oakland resident living in District 1, I fully support the city of Oakland's resolution to support the congressional and worldwide calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. This is just the first step in affirming Oakland's Love Life Commitment to "valuing life, uplifting love, and honoring those who spread love and help to stop violence in our communities in their work." We must stand on the right side of history and truly embody the values of love, life, and ending the interconnected cycles of violence that work to destroy communities here in Oakland, in Palestine, and around the world. We must stand together and wholeheartedly call for the end to the violence in Gaza and Palestine, and advocate for a Free Palestine where all Palestinians (both in Palestine and in the diaspora) can live with dignity, freedom, and liberation. Free Palestine <3
Please vote to call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire. It is our desire, our need, and our responsibility as a community to stand for tangible justice and universal liberation. Our support of Palestine is necessary to our support of each other. We urge you to strongly support this resolution, and to strongly support all continued work to bring an immediate and permanent ceasefire.
As a resident of district 6 in Oakland, I oppose the Oakland City Council draft resolution concerning the war between Hamas and Israel.
The resolution is problematic because it does not acknowledge that the war was started by the terrorist organization Hamas, nor does it include any language specifically condemning Hamas and its actions which include killing hundreds, taking hostages, and using Palestinians as human shields. The resolution should demand that Hamas surrender immediately, release the hostages, and allow the Palestinian people to have a free and fair election to create a representative government.
This resolution, as written, is dividing rather than uniting Oaklanders. Please vote against it.
Please support an immediate ceasefire in Gaza! Please stand with the people of Palestine. The death toll is staggering. 4000 children have been killed. Please stand against this horrific genocide. Remember the brave women and men who came before us, on whose shoulders you stand. Affirm your legacy as forward-thinking, life-affirming upholders of justice for all.
I am a Jewish Bay Area native living in Oakland for the last 15 years, demanding immediate ceasefire in Palestine. The world has seen the uncensored brutality utilized by the Israeli settler colonial state to oppress the indigenous population of the land of Palestine clearer now than it has in 75 years. As Americans, we’re tired of our tax money being put toward the systemic oppression of black and brown folks world wide. Ceasefire now!
As someone who calls Oakland home, I take great pride in our city's history of standing against oppression and championing human rights. I urge the City Council to reaffirm Oakland's commitment to these values by expressing our strong support for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, aligning with global calls for peace. Let our voices from Oakland resonate in the pursuit of a more just and peaceful world.
If it looks like a genocide and experts are calling it a genocide — ITS A GENOCIDE. Stand up against US support for apartheid state Israel and its terrorism on Palestinians.
Do what is right, vote to support a ceasefire. We are experiencing horrific war crimes brought by Israel upon the Palestinian people. We need every voice to speak up and support an end to this hatred and demand a stop to these genocidal actions.
Please vote in support of the ceasefire resolution so Oakland can join people of conscience of all races, ages, gender, religions and sexual orientations across the world calling for an end to bloodshed and a ceasefire in Gaza.
Since Oct 7th, this violence has claimed the lives of over 1200 Israelis and 13,000 Palestinians, half of whom are women and children.
On Nov 15th, a Reuters poll showed that 68% of all people polled and 75% of Democrats polled agreed with the statement “Israel should call a ceasefire.” Oakland would join two California cities Providence, Rhode Island and Akron, Ohio in the worldwide call for a ceasefire and an end to hostilities. Other cities are considering similar resolutions and Oakland would be the largest city to do so, displaying the clarity and popular voice calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
Passing this resolution would affirm our support for Rep. Barbara Lee’s congressional call for an immediate ceasefire (H.R. 786), the release of all hostages and an end to the siege on Gaza.
I am a resident in D1 of Oakland and urge Oakland City Council to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. In the past weeks we have watched a genocide unfold on our screens and social media feeds, financed by U.S. investment. A ceasefire is the first step towards ending the occupation.
As a longtime Oakland resident, worker, and voter, I urge the city council to pass this resolution. Though Oakland does not directly decide foreign policy, our city has historically been a national leader and changemaker in the fight for human rights. This is a watershed moment, in which our city council has the chance to help stop an ongoing occupation and genocide of the Palestinian people.
As an Oakland resident (D1), I urge the Council to pass the Ceasefire Resolution. The people of Oakland have always strived to stand united against injustice, and as our elected officials we need you to reflect your constituents’ voices and call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Palestine, call for an end to US funding for Israel’s military, and to allow unrestricted humanitarian aid into Gaza. Richmond has already passed a similar resolution, and we need you to follow their lead and be on the right side of history - ceasefire now!
Palestinian Lives are just as important as Israeli lives. A humanitarian pause on an ongoing genocide is not enough to save the Palestinian people. They have been oppressed for far too long, living under military occupation & the effect of a land, sea & air blockade. Gaza's economy is in shambles & relies on humanitarian aid. Palestinian children are dying, not by the tens but by the thousands. October 7 is just the tip of the iceberg. It is so shameful to see the portrayal of an entire group of people be tainted with false propaganda and blatant lies. It is even more shameful our government participates in such hatred. Above all, instead of our federal government investing in universe healthcare, free college tuition, college debt erasure, affordable housing, etc , they instead choose to fund a one sided war. Our federal government does NOT represent the masses but we're hoping Oakland does, by showing unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian struggle. We demand an immediate and permanent Ceasfire. We will not stop until Palestine is liberated.
