Agenda Item
11 23-0574 Subject: Salary Ordinance Amendment For Mayor
From: Human Resources Management Department
Recommendation: Adopt An Ordinance Amending The Salary Schedule Of Ordinance No. 12187 C.M.S. ("Salary Ordinance") To Increase The Salary Of The Mayor
Oppose! City is in DEFICIT! Mayor removes positions, limits hiring, limit services to residents. But she gets a raise? NO. Stand with Oakland. Money should go into direct services to the community. Vote NO! At the most, perhaps adjust by the minimum, not the maximum allowed.
This raise request is outrageous. The Mayor hakes enough money already. She has done nothing to deserve this incredible raise. Vote NO!
I oppose the proposed salary increase for the mayor in view of the declining budgets, infrastructures, escalating public safety issues , and plummeting quality of life conditions in Oakland.
I am opposed to the recommendation in the report to increase the mayors salary. The city is facing a significant budget deficit and this is not the time to increase the salary of the mayor when vital city services & departments are stretched thin, the 911 system is on the brink of crashing, and the city's infrastructure is crumbling around us. The salary of the mayor needs to be tied to performance metrics and outcomes achieved. What priorities has the mayor set to date and what progress has been made? The community is still waiting on the pothole blitz to needed to repair the streets. True leaders would know this is not an ideal time to request a raise.
NO to the salary increase!
I oppose this proposal to increase the mayor's salary by a shocking 73%. Oakland is suffering its worst-ever deficit. Now is not the time for this action. The report attached to this agenda item lists other mayors' salaries in the context of population, but it does not take into account the fiscal health of those cities. The article published today in the SF Chronicle indicates that the Oakland mayor's salary is appropriate as is. See the chart included: https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/california-mayor-pay-18176153.php
The Mayor should not be given a >30% salary increase: (1) after only being in the job for 7 months (she knew what the salary was when she ran for office); (2) when the City is facing the largest deficit ever and funding for basic city services weren't properly funded for a city of this size; (3) when her recently approved budget doesn't address issues in a long-term, sustainable manner; (4) when taxpayers aren't receiving basic city services, including but not limited to a clean and sanity city (parks, sidewalks, etc), well serviced roads, crime and safety, etc, (4) the City's revenue will decrease as people go elsewhere to shop, move, and businesses leave due to the issues referenced in (3); (5) she is a complete and abject failure who is in way over her head; (6) this is just so shady and unethical - she hires this new City Administrator who then proceeds to recommend a significant salary increase for her...how convenient. Gross all around. Do better Oakland.
