It's time to support the Emerald New Deal which will work to reverse racist policies by investing in the individuals, families, and neighborhoods targeted by the War on Drugs. It's time to END HARM by listening to the grassroots organizers who have invested so much to moving this initiative forward. And all we ask is that you place the initiative on the ballot so the people of Oakland can decide what is best for Oakland communities!
I am an Oakland resident living in the Adam's Point neighborhood. I am concerned about the damage done to Black and Brown communities in Oakland by criminalizing its residents during the War on Drugs. The Emerald New Deal could repair some of the harm done during the drug war by reinvesting in these communities with Cannabis Business Tax Revenue. This revenue could be used to invest in reentry programs for the formerly incarcerated, community-based mental health services, affordable housing, and employment developent and training. I urge you to make reparations by supporting the Emerald New Deal fund. Thank you.
My name is Sara Chakri and I am an Oakland resident of district 4, and I endorse and support the Emerald New Deal because it is intended to benefit the communities harmed by the war on drugs like mine. I urge our city council members to move the END Harm measure forward to a full city council vote, so Oakland residents can have a saying on this important initiative. The concerns expressed by the city council members are over just a 1% of the City’s General Fund, the reallocation of these funds will have a great impact on Black and brown communities, and these are the communities that have been historically disenfranchised and targeted by the war on drugs. Emerald New Deal wants to reinvest the Cannabis Business Tax revenues in the targeted communities to help the reentry of formerly incarcerated folks through reentry programs, mental health services, affordable housing, and economic development services. This is a chance to repair the harm that has been done and to invest resources in the harmed communities.
