Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution Celebrating Affordable Housing In Oakland And Proclaiming May As "Affordable Housing Month" In Oakland
This is performative and tone-deaf. What purpose does this proclamation serve? Council already votes to declare homelessness an emergency in every single meeting and where has that gotten us? What is council going to do about the 6.7% rental increase, making housing even less affordable for many.
Why are we celebrating "Affordable Housing Month, " when we have and continue to lose affordable housing? The rent adjustment board has approved 6.4% rent increases for rent controlled units as of July 2, 2022. This is making Oakland less affordable and may cause displacement for many and increase homelessness.
