From: Council President Fortunato Bas
Recommendation: A Discussion And Potential Action On Council Priorities, Including But Not Limited To Implementation And Evaluation, And Collaborative Approaches To Working Via Council Committees And Across City Branches of Government, For Fiscal Year 2021-23 Budgeting Process Following Facilitated Discussion On The Same
The Mayor's budget is not the Just Recovery Budget we need and her calling it that is out of line. Over the last year, we are seeing other cities walk back their commitment to move money and roles out of policing and into reimagining public safety, and we see that in the Mayor's budget too.
We are counting on you to not let Oakland be one of those cities, counting on you to hold fast to the commitment you made in unanimously signing on to the Reimagining Public Safety resolution authored by Carroll Fife and cosponsored by Nikki Fortunato Bas. This is incredible work and i’m writing with a great deal of respect. We all want an Oakland where all people have housing and healthcare, where there’s compassionate non-police resources for mental health needs like MH First OAK, good protected union jobs and pathways to them, clean, healthy, green parks, streets, schools and playgrounds, education and youth programs, support for elders, access and disability justice, community gardens, food justice, funding and support for arts and culture, violence interruption programs and transformative justice. We don't want an Oakland where human needs are defunded and harmful policing gets a blank check. Thank you for standing for what the people if Oakland need so that everyone can thrive.
