From: President Pro Tempore Thao, Councilmember Kalb And Gallo
Recommendation: Adopt An Emergency Ordinance Extending And Amending Chapter 5.94 Of The Oakland Municipal Code To Extend Emergency Paid Sick Leave For Oakland Employees During The Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) Pandemic
Dear Council Members,
My name is Cynthia Morfin and I am an Oakland organizer and a West Oakland resident. COVID-19 is at an all-time high with no end in sight. We know this is largely because of our governments' disregard for working-class people of color. We ask you to be part of the change and to stand with Oakland's essential workers by voting yes on extending our emergency paid sick leave ordinance so people can take care of themselves and our families.
Dear Council members:
I'm an Oakland resident and I urge you to vote yes to extend emergency paid sick leave protections for Oakland workers. Help protect our public health by making sure workers don't have to go to work when they are sick. ALL workers deserve to be protected and honored during this public health crisis. When we protect one, we are protecting all!
I'm a restaurant worker in Oakland and I am asking you to please vote yes to extend emergency paid sick time for us. I have been working through this pandemic and knowing I have paid sick days to fall back on is important for me and Co workers. Thank you.
Dear Councilmembers:
I'm an Oakland resident and I urge you to vote yes to extend emergency paid sick leave protections for Oakland workers. Help protect our public health by making sure workers don't have to go to work when they are sick. Help stop the spread of Covid. Thank you for your anticipated support.
My name is Angela Breining and I am an attorney with the Workers Rights Program at Centro Legal de la Raza. It is essential that you vote yes to extend the emergency paid sick leave protections for Oakland workers. For almost a year that has been this pandemic, we have had hundreds of workers call our lines expressing their concerns of feeling unsafe at work because of outbreaks of CVOID cases at their place of employment. Without the extended emergency paid sick leave, these workers are forced to either continue working in unsafe working conditions or stay home without pay and not be able to provide for their families. We therefore urge you to vote yes on the extended emergency paid sick leave protections to protect Oakland workers and our communities. Thank you.
Dear Councilmembers,
I’m an Oakland resident and a restaurant worker and I urge you to vote yes to extend emergency Paid sick leave protections for Oakland workers. These are very difficult times for all of us and we shouldn’t have to worry about whether we would be able to put food on our tables or keep a roof over our head; for some of us working from home is not an option so we have to go out to do our job. Help protect our public health by making sure workers don’t have to go to work when they are sick. Help stop the spread of Covid. Thank you for your support.
Please pass this, especially as we come up on a year of pandemic it is deeply important to support your constituents with the ability to have security if they need to take off work for likeness or to care for a sick family member, because it’s also community care for them to stay home and not get others sick- and it’s better for the economy to keep folks employed. The government has failed us so much this year, I’ve lived in oakland for seven years and I beg you to take care of us by extending paid family leave.
As a D1 resident and someone who cares deeply about worker justice and public health, Emergency Paid Sick Leave is so important to fight the pandemic and protect workers. Thank you for your leadership in the past and please pass this extension today!
Dear Councilmembers:
I'm an D 5 resident and Oakland Teacher. The educators of Oakland urge you to vote yes to extend emergency paid sick leave protections for Oakland workers. Help protect our public health by making sure workers don't have to go to work when they are sick. Help stop the spread of Covid and protect our vulnerable families. Thank you for your anticipated support.
As an Oakland organizer, restaurant worker, and resident, I urge you to vote yes to extend emergency paid sick leave for us. Through my work, I have seen firsthand colleagues in chain restaurants and our industry who need to use these days in order to prevent the spread, be it because they were exposed and needed to get tested or had symptoms themselves. I cannot imagine the risks both for themselves, their families, and coworkers they would have had to face had they not had access. Please protect my colleagues and protect all of us. Thank you for your support.

It's sad that Oakland employees can't count on having paid sick leave under all circumstances and I hope that some day we will get to that. Extending the emergency paid sick leave is the minimum we must do during this pandemic.
I am a D3 Oakland resident and I urge Council in the strongest possible terms to extend emergency paid sick leave for Oakland employees. Extending and expanding paid sick leave for workers is not the just and moral thing to do, it is also good public health policy. When workers have access to paid sick leave, it benefits all of us.
I support extending the emergency paid sick leave for the sake of those impacted by COVID-19. This crisis is nowhere near over, and we need to keep everyone safe by ensuring people can take time off when they're not feeling well.
