7 20-0670 Subject: Gun Violence Top Law Enforcement Priority
From: Council President Kaplan
Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution Declaring Gun Violence Prevention To Be The Top Law Enforcement Priority For The City Of Oakland Through The Decrease Of Illegal Guns And Gun Violence By Effective Means Such As The Increase Of Gun And Shell Casing Tracing, Improved Response To Notifications Of Shootings, Prioritization Of Actions To Stop And Respond To Gun Crime And Provision Of An Informational Report On Gun Response, Including Response Times To Notifications Of Shootings And Armed Robberies
As a District 4 resident and a member of Team Enough, a youth led gun violence prevention organization, I support this resolution. We have a chance to act on gun violence here, and it is imperative we do so.
As a Moms Demand Action volunteer and a Bay Area resident with a daughter living in Oakland, I encourage the City Council to pass this resolution making gun violence prevention the top priority for Oakland law enforcement. This will make Oakland and all Bay Area cities safer. Thank you.
As a District 1 resident and program manager with Brady, a gun violence prevention organization. It is our sincere belief, based on the available evidence, that the accessibility of guns contributes to increased gun violence. Reducing gun violence isn’t an either/or. We can support programs focused on the demand for firearms while building a clear strategy on how to disrupt the flow of crime guns into our communities. I have been disheartened by the lack of transparency from the Oakland Police Department as it relates to the source of crime guns. Our organization has offered the analysis support of a reputable UC lab on multiple occasions leading me to believe this isn’t about lack of resources. We have even filed a public records request and were provided with none of the information requested. It is not unreasonable to expect OPD to hold accountable those profiting from gun violence in Oakland.
As a volunteer for East Bay Moms Demand Action and Everytown for Gun Safety in America and a resident of Oakland for 15 years I am keenly aware of the devastation that gun violence has on our city and its community members. By making this the highest priority for law enforcement, our community will be enriched and safer for all its residents and poised for the much needed equitable solutions from the city to help with root cause of gun related crimes. Thank you for your consideration.
The East Bay chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America has over 2000 registered volunteers who reside in Oakland. We understand gun violence has many root causes, which the city seeks to address. But IMMEDIATE action is needed NOW to curb the carnage currently taking lives in the City of Oakland.
We urge the City Council to support and pass this resolution to make gun violence the highest priority to law enforcement, and direct their resources accordingly to address this problem in our city.
Thank you for your consideration.
I am a volunteer with East Bay Moms Demand Action - a local group working with Moms Demand Action and Everytown for Gun Safety. I live in Oakland and am acutely aware that our city is hit hard by gun violence. Although we've made progress in recent years, the COVID 19 crisis has disrupted prevention efforts and we've seen an increase in gun deaths and injuries in recent months. Please make reducing gun violence a priority in all your decisions. Please direct funding to the community centered approaches that have proved successful in quelling gun violence. Please recognize and support the revisioning of law enforcement to make our city safe for all of its inhabitants.
