2.18 20-0719 Subject: Opposition To Proposition 22
From: Council President Kaplan
Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution In Opposition Of Proposition 22, A Ballot Measure To Exempt App-Based Transportation And Delivery Companies From Providing Employee Benefits To Certain Drivers
I urge the adoption of this resolution. It will send a clear message of No On Prop 22. An estimated 200,000+ transportation workers are misclassified as independent contractors in California alone. This creates an enduring underclass of workers who are denied access to minimum wages, sick leave, unemployment insurance, and many other rights. These billion dollar gig companies also want to prohibit workers from coming together in their workplaces and joining a union. They want to exempt themselves permanently from California labor laws, laws that we’ve worked hard to put in place to protect our members and working people in Oakland and across the state. Vote No on Prop 22.

I am opposed to proposition 22 because it would take protections away from drivers and other app employees such as workers' compensation.
