20-0689 3) Receive An Oral Report Regarding The Objectives And Timeline Of The Newly Established Reimagining Public Safety Task Force, From The Task Force Co-Chairs And Co-Facilitators
On behalf of the many Oakland residents who are volunteers with the East Bay chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, we applaud members of the Oakland City Council in supporting the "Reimagining Public Safety Task Force" to find ways to improve policing practices in Oakland. We urge the Oakland City Council to seriously consider the specific recommendations the task force will present in order to make Oakland a safer place to live. One of the most important would be a recommendations regarding a review of the current OPD "Use of Force" policies in order to better serve the whole community.
Thanks for listening...
Hello! Please make sure that in identifying tasks that should be removed from OPD's portfolio, the task force also identifies a proposed alternative. For example, I agree with many that noise complaints should not be handled through OPD in the first instance. I wish there was someone else to call about the 8-10+ hours of excessive noise Lake Merritt neighbors experience every weekend day. Please do not leave residents with *no* recourse; help identify an OPD alternative that could, for example, establish strong community relationships so that when noise issues are reported to them, they can have respectful and productive conversations with the parties making the noise (and, if necessary, issue warnings or administrative citations, etc.). Thank you for all the work you're doing!
