My name is Angie Noel and I'm a member of Imani Community Church and also of Faith in Action East Bay. As a longtime East Oakland resident, I am deeply concerned about the recent increase in gun violence in our community. I strongly urge the Council members and various city departments and agencies represented tonite, including the new Reimagining Public Safety Task Force, to be certain that any next steps continue to support proven existing strategies, like Ceasefire, which have been effective tools for years even while we consider adding new approaches. I also think it's vital that with every step you take, you proactively reach out to all members of impacted communities, including congregations and faith-based organizations, who will bring their vital, compassionate and healing voice to the table. It will take a village, the whole village, to bring peace and safety to our families and loved ones.

I’m writing encouraging the City Council in continuing to support the successful efforts of the Oakland Ceasefire Program in working towards the reduction in gun violence in partnership with the Department of Violence Prevention. Given the recent increase in violence, coupled with the pandemic, now is not the time to pull back tools of success to address this issue. As a regular and long term weekly Friday Night East Oakland Ceasefire Walker, I know from personal experience the difference our engagement with the community has made. It’s imperative that Ceasfire funding remains steady and it’s overall program remains a top priority in addressing gun violence and reimagining Public Safety.

My name is George Yamashita, representing the East Bay Chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. On behalf of the many of our volunteers who are Oakland residents, we ask the Oakland City Council's continued support of Oakland Ceasefire. Especially in light of the ongoing, and recent homicides the community is experiencing during the pandemic.
Continued support of the Oakland's Department of Violence Prevention's efforts to end violence against all Oakland residents is key for the city to move forward.
    THANKS for listening!!
