2.31 20-0576 Subject: Commemorative Street Renaming In Honor Of Huey P. Newtown
From: Councilmember McElhaney
Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution Commemoratively Renaming 9th Street Between Center St. And Chester St. As 'Dr. Huey P. Newton Way' Per The Process Established By Res. No. 77967 C.M.S.
thank you so much for changing the street name to honor Dr. Newton in this important time. It is incredibly affirming for us to see our great leaders and to celebrate all those who came before us to demand justice. Oakland deserves to celebrate all of the great contributions her community had made! ..,and this street will help everyone to remember. Thank you for your consideration.
My name is T. I’m from West Oakland. I am from two blocks where Huey P Newton was assassinated. This street name change is long overdue. In this time of reconciling our past, the city of Oakland needs to acknowledge the work of the Black Panther Party which my parents were apart of and pass this ordinance. It would be a shame to continue to ignore the work of black people especially in the historic lower bottoms! Act NOW
Thank you to District 3 Councilmember McElhaney for putting forward the Dr.Huey P. Newton street naming resolution. I wholeheartedly support this resolution because of Dr.Newton's courage and extensive community engagement for Black descendants as the co-founder of The Black Panther Party. It is a great first step for Oakland in honoring a man who dedicated his life to justice for Black people while creating systems of community outreach to provide foundational support for intentionally marginalized and ignored residents.
