11 20-0528 Subject: In Support Of Assembly Bill 3121
From: President Pro Tempore Kalb
Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution In Support Of Assembly Bill 3121 (Weber) That Would Establish The Taskforce To Study And Develop Reparation Proposals For African Americans And Would Require (1) The Task Force To Identify, Compile, And Synthesize The Relevant Corpus Of Evidentiary Documentation Of The Institution Of Slavery That Existed Within The United States And The Colonies; (2) The Task Force To Recommend The Form Of Compensation That Should Be Awarded, The Instrumentalities Through Which It Should Be Awarded, And Who Should Be Eligible For Compensation; And (3) The Task Force To Submit A Written Report Of Its Findings And Recommendations To The State Legislature; And Would Authorize Reimbursement Of The Members' Expenses Only To The Extent An Appropriation Is Made In The Budget Act
Resident of D3 and I strongly support the move towards reparations and the redistribution of wealth to those who have experienced generational financial harm via the institutions of slavery and institutional racism.
As a resident of District 3 and White woman, I strongly support Assembly Bill 3121 and favor urgent, comprehensive reparations for our Black and Indigenous communities. As the brilliant Nikole Hannah-Jones articulated in a recent NYT Magazine piece, we will NEVER be able to achieve justice and liberation for Black and Indigenous people in this country until we pay the multi-generational debt they are owed. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/06/24/magazine/reparations-slavery.html
If this doesn't move forward at the state level, please make it happen in Oakland.
D2 resident and I strongly support this critically important bill. Reparations are an essential component of justice to amend the wrongdoings of this nation's racist past and present, and I'd love to see Oakland emerge as an example for the rest of the nation.
Resident of district 1. I echo this comment & fully support reparations for Black and Indigenous people. Reparations are essential and necessary if we are to ever achieve any modicum of equity.
Resident of District 2 and fully support reparations for Black and Indigenous people. Reparations are essential and necessary if we are to ever achieve any modicum of equity.
Since the end of the Civil War reparations have been frequently discussed and infrequently paid. In Oakland, with the redirection of funds from the police department to the community, we have an opportunity to change that reality. The proposed Task Force is a step toward claiming that opportunity.
Resident of District 4 and fully support reparations for Black and Indigenous people. Reparations are essential and necessary if we are to ever achieve any modicum of equity.
I am in full support of reparations for black and indigenous people. It is long overdue and Oakland needs to make a strong and clear commitment to working for racial justice.
I am a resident of D1 and I fully support this measure. Reparations are an essential way that our country, and our city needs to heal. To vote "No" on this measure is to deny that systemic racism is prevalent in our city. I would advocate for the most substantial amount of reparations possible.
