My name is Reshonda Williams, and I support authorizing the City Administrator to execute a contract with Oakland Promise to establish college accounts for OUSD students.

I am a first-generation college graduate because I grew up with parents who leveraged the resources of programs like Oakland Promise Kindergarten to College. These programs provided a way for my parents to invest in my education by making sure I went to school prepared,  had a College Savings Account in my name, and told me every day that I was college-bound, even though they themselves had never been. These actions helped further ensure my success and they are one of the main reasons I am so passionate about my work and Oakland Promise, and why I have a college degree.

I am the Program Associate of the Oakland Promise  Brilliant Baby Team, and both Brilliant Baby and Kindergarten to College set up and fund financial accounts for college when children are very young. These funds are a meaningful downpayment on their opportunity to succeed in school and pursue post-secondary education. Research shows that low- and moderate-income students who have money set aside for their college education are more likely to attend and complete college.

Thank you for your support and let's keep Oakland's Promise to invest in our students and families.

My name is Diego Pinto, and I support authorizing the City Administrator to execute a contract with Oakland Promise to establish college accounts for OUSD students. We just moved with my family to Oakland and we are living our dream of homeownership for the first time. My 12-year old daughter will be attending OUSD schools.
I am the Coaching Program Manager with the Brilliant Baby program. Both programs set up and fund financial accounts for college when children are very young. These funds are a  meaningful downpayment on their opportunity to succeed in school and pursue post-secondary education.  Research shows that low- and moderate-income students who have money set aside for their college education are more likely to attend and complete college.

Since 2016, the Oakland City Council - through budget action - has promised five years of OUSD public and charter school kindergartens an initial contribution of $100 into their Kindergarten to College account. I urge Council members to follow through on your promise to our children by authorizing the City Administrator to execute this grant with Oakland Promise so that it can invest the funds into students’ college accounts.
Oakland Promise through Brilliant Baby and K2C has established college accounts for nearly 700 babies and 20,000 OUSD students. We’ve helped nearly 600 families set up their own 529 college savings plans to save for their children’s education.
Thank you for the Council’s early and ongoing support.

Please support our K2C Early College Scholarship Fund! This Fund allows us to continue programming throughout Oakland elementary schools and provide students with their first scholarship so that they know they are starting their path to the rest of their lives. I believe college to be life changing because I experienced it firsthand myself and I would like others to have the same opportunity.

My name is Amanda Feinstein, and I support authorizing the City Administrator to execute a contract with Oakland Promise to establish college accounts for OUSD students. I am a 25-year resident of Oakland. My adult son was born and raised here and attended OUSD schools. I am the director of the Oakland Promise Brilliant Baby program and helped develop Kindergarten to College. Both programs set up and fund financial accounts for college, when children are very young. These funds are a meaningful downpayment on their opportunity to succeed in school and pursue post-secondary education. My name is Jasmine Nasser and I am the K2C Program Manager at Oakland Promise.

I encourage you to adopt this resolution. I've made a video with family and OUSD staff testimonials in support of the Early College Scholarship Fund: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ekNCqFQm6jrQXf0JT8Pv4Fc-AB8vCiHa/view?usp=sharing

Even though I was the first in my family to go to college, I never doubted that I would obtain a college degree because I knew I had the support of my family and my community. Oakland Promise Kindergarten to College shows OUSD students that the city of Oakland supports and believes in them. The $100 that each OUSD kindergartner receives shows students that the Oakland community believes in them and will support them in achieving their dreams.

Before this job, I was a 1st grade classroom teacher and I personally saw the impact of having students think of themselves as college-bound individuals. Through the Kindergarten to College program, we have been able to bring over 800 OUSD students and their families to a major college campus (UC Berkeley) and have helped over 550 families open up their own college savings accounts.

Please adopt this resolution so we can keep our promise to Oakland kids and continue supporting families. Thank you for your support.
