This is an important initiative that will give youth a second chance after a low level criminal offiense. It means that they take responsibility for the harm they caused, and engage in a restorative justice process that means they won't have an arrest record. the Police Commission has endorsed this pilot program and so did former Police Chiefs Whent and Kirkpatrick.

I fully support the MOU for this forward-looking program that would divert youth from entering the criminal justice program. This kind of community supported program would provide positive and real help to youth, encouraging them to remain involved in their education or training. This would interrupt society’s usual practice of committing youth to expensive punitive criminal justice settings. The MOU would be far more cost-effective than continuing the current status quo of incarceration for youth.
