My name is Albertina (Bettemie) Prins, RN and I live
in District # 1 in Oakland.
I’ve been a resident of the district for 11 years.
I’m in full support of Agenda Item #4A, the resolution to protect our Laotian community members, including Danny Thongsy and Sakhone Lasaphangthong. Both Danny and Sakhone have been contributing members of our community, as leaders in Oakland since their release
from State Prison. I have worked in the community with Danny for the past year and a half and am continually impressed by his kind, thoughtful dedication to his community and to making Oakland a better place for all. He is a leader and asset to Oakland.
Under this current anti-immigrant federal administration, it’s important more than ever that our elected Oakland Officials demonstrate leadership and protect our Lao, Hmong, Lu-Mien, Khmu and immigrant community. Keeping Danny and Sakhone in Oakland, makes our community safer!
Sincerely,
Albertina Prins, RN

I am writing in support of the resolution asking Governor Newsom to pardon community leaders, Somdeng “Danny” Thongsy and Sakhone Lasaphangthong.
I have gotten to know Danny and Sakhone through my synagogue’s interfaith work on immigration justice issues and have heard them tell their stories of trauma and transformation. I have been deeply impressed by both Danny and Sakhones' passion for justice, devotion to keeping their families and communities together and their belief in the possibility of healing for those who have experienced many kinds of trauma. I have heard both Danny and Sakhone speak eloquently about their work on behalf of others who are threatened with deportation to countries they have never known.
These are good people who made mistakes many years ago but who are now leaders in the community.
Danny and Sakhone have gone through the arduous process of proving to the parole board that they are no longer a danger to society and should be pardoned.

Both Danny and Sakhone have been contributing members of our community, as leaders in Oakland since their release from State Prison. They are both members of the community and a pardon from the Governor will be a huge relief to them and their families from fear of deportation.
Under this current anti-immigrant federal administration, it’s important more than ever that our elected Oakland Officials demonstrate leadership and protect our Lao, Hmong, Lu-Mien, Khmu and immigrant community. It also calls on Governor Gavin Newsom to fully pardon Danny and Sakhone to prevent their deportation to Laos, and allow them to stay with family and community. Keeping Danny and Sakhone in Oakland, makes our community safer!
