6 18-2457 Subject: Cesar Chavez National Historic Park
From: Councilmember Gallo
Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution In Support Of The National Park Service And The Wilderness Society In The Establishment Of The Cesar Chavez Historic Park
On behalf of The Wilderness Society and our one million members and supporters, I write to express our support for the resolution proposed by Councilmember Gallo in support of establishing the Cesar Chavez National Historical Park (file #18-2457).
Cesar Chavez lifted the lives of millions of Americans, including those in the City of Oakland. Chavez has deep roots in Oakland and got his start organizing in Oakland’s Fruitvale district in the 1950s.
Despite his contributions, there is no national park recognizing Cesar Chavez’ life and work. In 2013, the National Park Service recommended establishment of a such a park. Six years later, Congress has still not acted on this recommendation.
We respectfully request that the City of Oakland pass the resolution in support of the Cesar Chavez National Historical Park, which will honor Cesar Chavez and teach all Americans about his legacy.
