From: Economic And Workforce Development
Recommendation: Adopt One Of The Following Pieces Of Legislation:
1) Resolution Directing The City Administrator To Issue A Request For Proposals That Is Consistent With The State Surplus Land Act And The Competitive Process Set Forth In Chapter 2.42.050 Of The Oakland Municipal Code For The Disposition And Development Of The Fire Alarm Building At 1310 Oak Street; Or, Alternatively
I strongly support the repurposing of the Fire Alarm Building as a Jazz Museum as proposed by David Allen. The project would be a wonderful addition to the Cultural District; proposes a robust array of benefit from the underutilized space that animates the area with intellectual and cultural activity; will serve as a hub for cultural activity intended to promote thriving. The proposed use is consistent with the concept of Cultural Preservation which is an apt use of Public Land for the public good. It aligns with strategy identified, in the Mayor's Task Force Report on Artists and Housing, for cultural retention. The impetus to provide housing for all should be met with the commitment for robust efforts at cultural retention and the concepts of preservation and the proliferation of spaces For cultural practice in an arts district. The proposed development would produce a world class arts institution in Oakland and should be encouraged and embraced. -Dr Nzinga, LBP, BAMBD CDC, CCED.
