4 18-1638 Subject: Neonicotinoid Restriction To Protect Pollinators
From: President Pro Tempore Kalb, Councilmember Bas And Council President Kaplan
Recommendation: Adopt A Ordinance: (1) Establishing The City Of Oakland's (City) Policy Prohibiting The City's Use Of Neonscotinoid Pesticides (Neonicotinoids) In Order To Protect Honey Bees And Other Pollinators; (2) Urging The Adoption Of State And Federal Restrictions On Neonscotsnoids; And (3) Urging Retailers Operating In The City Of Oakland To Not Sell Neonscotinoids
I enthusiastically support the ban on neonicotinoids and urge you to make it the first step towards a full ban on pesticides.
There is ample evidence that Roundup - recently in the news with $2 billion in punitive damages for Monsanto to pay - is very harmful to pollinators.
There is ample evidence that pesticides are a primary cause of insects decline all over the world.
It is also well knows that the eucalyptus trees targeted for logging and PESTICIDE APPLICATIONS in the East Bay hills are the preferred overwintering habitat for endangered Monarch butterflies, and an important source of nectar year round for pollinators.
I urge you to make the ending of deforestation and ban of pesticides the high priority for the city of Oakland.
I support a ban on neonicotinoids. It is the first step toward banning all pesticides. Research (https://e360.yale.edu/features/bee-alert-is-a-controversial-herbicide-harming-honeybees?fbclid=IwAR1ax_j5Q-gCq317uo2oCSyRRAo7wdgSmKY24JpA6PNU8s70uvgDIrCyOe8) indicates that glyphosate is also harmful to bees by “impeding the growth of bee larvae, diminishing bees’ navigational skills, altering their foraging behavior, or even disrupting their gut microorganisms, known as the microbiome.”
Insects are rapidly disappearing around the world. A recent study identifies pesticides as one of the primary causes of the “Insect Apocalypse.” The study analyzes 73 individual studies of declining insect populations of 50% and more. Pesticides are also harmful to people. There are many reasons to ban pesticides. I hope a ban on neonics is the first step towards that goal.
