The Sheriffs Office has long been out of control. From Dujuan Armstrong to Jessica St. Louis - numerous people are beaten, tortured and killed inside Santa Rita Jail every year. Multiple lawsuits have been brought against them regarding wrongful deaths, the treatment of pregnant women, the conditions of the cells which are covered with feces, urine and blood, and the toxicity of the food and water. An audit will be a powerful tool for transparency and accountability to community and it is long overdue. Not to mention the Sheriff's departments actions toward immigrants are in violation of our Sanctuary City mandate.

I support Council member Bas' resolution to support community requests for an independent audit of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office in the interests of transparency and accountability. The Oakland community has been seeking such an audit for several years. The Sheriff runs his department like a sheriff from the ol' Wild West. There have been around 35 mysterious deaths at the Santa Rita jail which Sheriff Ahern runs, as well as numerous charges of inmate abuse and cover-ups by the Sheriff's Deputies. To date, Alameda County Supervisors have not provided sufficient supervision of Ahern to keep County residents safe. If Ahern has nothing to hide, than an audit will prove so.
