    As a public official, it is never easy to make an emotional or popular or unpopular decision. I agree with with Council Member Kalb, who qualified his decision by stating simply “this makes sense” and I strongly agree, adding this makes good fiscal sense.

    I recently read that BART’s governing board and its police union approved a four-year 16% increase contract including giving police department employees a one-time 6 percent pay boost.

    It is important that we attempt to keep pace with other agencies to mitigate the consistent attrition rate within the Oakland Police Department we are experiencing.

    At today's Special Meeting of the ORA & City Council, I ask that you remain unwavering during the second reading affirming your first reading vote. Please vote yes on item 7.30!

    For those on council who did not vote yea, it is time to put away emotions and make a fiscal responsible vote...vote yes!

    I support the Salary Ordinance but think the passage should be delayed until the newly elected councilmembers have been sworn and have an opportunity to cast votes that reflect the wishes of their constituents. Case in point, should Councilmember Brooks be absent and councilmember elect Taylor not allowed to vote; District 6 residents are denied a voice.

    This is being pushed through in a very suspect and offensive way. Why the rush? There should be more discussion of the monetary and non-monetary elements of this MOU, including input from the public, the new Council members and the Police Commission. Please postpone this item.

    Why is this on the consent calendar? Where is this tentative agreement, and why has it not been made available to the public? Why has the public not been given an opportunity to inform these negotiations? We need more accountability with Oakland Police officers. I oppose any further increases in salary, benefits, etc. without concrete measures to improve accountability.
