In future homeless funding plans please consider earmarking child care and homeless family support resources. Many homeless families are not visible to the community for their children's privacy. We have been working with Parent Voices, Bananas, Family Front Door, First 5, and the County Social Services Agency to develop child care access and navigation to existing public child care subsidies in Oakland with back up vouchers through the CARE program. Supervisor Chan provided $100,000 and First 5 and the Social Services Agency have supported a child care navigator. Our staff provides in kind planning time. Child care subsidies support healthy child development, enable parents to seek or maintain employment, and maximizes their income for rent. We also ask that you consider providing funding this winter to increase family shelters and/or warming centers which are an immediate need as we work on longer term prevention solutions.
