15-1250 2) A Resolution (A) Applying Ordinance No. C.M.S. [An Ordinance (1) Amending The Oakland Municipal Code To Prohibit The Storage And Handling Of Coal And Coke At Bulk Material Facilities Or Terminals Throughout The City Of Oakland And (2) Adopting California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Exemption Findings] To The Proposed Oakland Bulk And Oversized Terminal Located In The West Gateway Development Area Of The Former Oakland Army Base; And (B) Adopting CEQA Exemption Findings And Relying On The Previously Certified 2002 Army Base Redevelopment Plan EIR And 2012 Addendum [NEW TITLE]
I support the ban on coal and coke in Oakland, and that these dangerous, toxic commodities and products should not be transported to and from Oakland. Please refer to my other comments that I have already submitted to this Council and Mayor online and through email today.
NO COAL IN OAKLAND... IT IS HAZARDOUS TO OUR HEALTH... READ THE EIR..... OAKLAND HAS A VERY HIGH RATE OF ASTHMA IN CHILDREN AND ADULTS WHO NEVER HAD IT BEFORE. DO NOT STORE COAL IN OAKLAND.
I fully support a ban on coal storage in Oakland. Why are we still even using coal? There are other options, GREENER options, for energy. The health risks to the workers and the citizens are too high as well. Oakland does not need to be used for coal storage!! No no no!
I am a resident and retired environmental urban planner. We reported the facts, both good and bad. In this case, the transport of materials through communities along a rail line will have significant environmental impacts, not to mention the impacts on workers and those visiting this facility. What else needs to be said? Businesses and individuals have come into jurisdictions for years with the promise of jobs, for the betterment of the community, etc and then they're off to the next project and the next community, with their pockets just a little fuller. Lets not fall into that trap. The elected officials need to do what is overall best for all the communities these trains will travel through. I don't know if many have ever visited Utah. I have. the areas mined are overwhelming dead and morbid looking. They did not even look real. It was scary. Officials need to ask do we really want to be a part of this?
Global warming due to release of carbon dioxide is real. The safest way to store carbon is as coal buried deep in the ground. I support a ban on the shipment of coal through Oakland. -- Brian Maiorella (Adjunct Professor, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering)
I support the resolution to ban storage, handling, and transportation of coal and coke in city owned property. The health hazards are awful, the environmental impacts will be felt for generations, and it doesn't even appear there is demands
I strongly support the resolution to PROHIBIT storage, handling, and transportation of coal and coke in Oakland due to the health hazard and environmental impacts.
We support the prohibition of transportation, handling and storage of coal and coke in Oakland. We agree with the three studies which support the prohibition. In particular, we are concerned about the potential health impact to the population which lives near the route and terminals. Children and the elderly are at particular risk. And too many accidents, including the one in Canada a couple years ago, show how dangerous these materials are. Nora & David Levine
And we need this resolution to make clear that the ordinance does apply to the Bowie Coal/TLS project, and to any other present or future export terminals. Let's say No to Coal, clearly, and move ahead.
Please adopt the ordinance. You will be protecting the health and safety of Oakland residents, as well as of other residents who have been prevented from acting in their own behalf by the ridiculous inaction of the Surface Transportation Board.
Ban storage and transport of coal through Oakland and its terminals. Bad for the environment and public health, especially the poorest in our city. Risks public funds.
I support whatever legalese reduces and eventually eliminates the exporting of mined nonrenewable, polluting energy resources--for the benefit of citizens in Utah, other western states, Oakland, and the world. If we can place barriers to profit-making from dirty technologies, would investors and inventors put their capital and genius to work toward beneficial solutions that sustain generations to come?
I fully SUPPORT the RESOLUTION to BAN ALL COAL activity in Oakland. END ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICE. When other states make the decision to mine toxic substances, they need to evaluate the toxic waste management consequences. Having another city in another state shoulder the burden, impacting all communities along the way to Oakland, especially communities of color, continues to open the door to private industry's ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICE. Please do not let Oakland be complicit. Please support other communities who will also face this same struggle as we all continue to OPPOSE POISONING our communities and our planet.
thank you,

I strongly support banning coal trains from Oakland. The health, safety and environmental impacts outweigh any potential benefits.
No loopholes. No coal.

I do not think the health of West Oakland residents outweighs the potential benefits to the city. I fully support this ban.

Oakland is becoming a beautiful thriving city.... We do NOT need to have a facility that stores a dangerous substance. I strongly oppose this plan.
